Sept 26th Update - Have recieved word from Patrick that he has made it off the Moisie safely. He put in at 2.30pm Monday (the 21st) and got off today (the 26th) just after noon. Less than 5 full days to get down 380kms solo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- September 19th - Just recieved this update from Patrick:

"Well, it doesn't look like the Mecatina is going to happen this year. I arrived in Natashquan (20hours north east of Ottawa) last Sunday with the river at the optimal 300cms. The rain started and the float plane was grounded for 3 days - when it was finally cleared to fly the river was spiking hard. With only 4 days left to get down to catch the once-a-week ferry and the high likelihood that the gorge would be unrunnable I decided to wait it out with the plan of flying Sunday. It's Saturday now, and despite the continued clear weather the river is still rising, currently at 970cms... triple the flow of our 2007 descent.

I've just been waiting up here alone for a week and i'm over it. I really just want to do some boating. I'm going to drive up to Labrador City today and start down the Pekans/Moisie again... 380kms on my own down to Sept-Iles.

Thanks for all the support that came through for the solo Mecatina trip... Pretty anticlimactic end to the many months it occupied my mind but as the trailer park boys would say it's "the way she goes"... Hoping to make it down the Moisie in 7days, otherwise i'll be getting pretty hungry out there."

The main goal of the Stakeout is to find new waves. We paddle rivers in flood and search for spots with potential, sometimes we find waves and sometimes we don't. As the Stakeout rolled on we were graced with some quality days at The Ruins... Just minutes from downtown Ottawa, The Ruins is a fast and fun wave formed by water consticted by the remnant walls of an old mill. There are major hazards (fatal sieves) formed by some of the other structures so some local knowledge/common sense is a good idea before paddling out.

From the Philippines, the boys set off for a waterfall session in Vietnam. The Srepok river, outside of Buon Ma Thot, offers easily accessible waterfalls with many lines to choose from. Patrick and Ben were part of the first group to run these drops a couple years earlier while filming for the 'Young Gun Productions' flick, SOURCE. The group enjoyed a few days of warm water waterfalling before heading off to see more of the area and then flying home for the '09 Stakeout in Quebec.

The Philippines

From Malaysia the boys headed off to the Philippines in search of seldom run whitewater and the potential for some first descents. The province of Luzon offers up some incredible scenery and awesome rivers to those willing to deal with their logistics. Transport doesn't move fast on the mountain roads and delays are common due to landslides and generally difficult muddy mountain roads. It wasn't uncommon to have a 50km drive take 6 hours. The team ran a 95km section of the Chico, the upper and lower Saltan and the lower Pasil before low water levels turned their attention to the beaches and catching some waves. The Philippines is a beautiful country full of friendly people. It has great potential for adventure, with a number of un-seen rivers with deep and menacing gorges waiting for a dedicated team to head in with substantial climbing gear and lots of time on their hands. The boys send a big thank you out to Ned, Steve, and Danny for all their help.

First Descent of the South Fork Signor Mangaa

This past December, Canadians Ben Marr, Dave Nieuwenhuis and Patrick Camblin along with South African Andrew Pollock and Ireland's Nick Doran spent a month exploring the rivers of Peninsular Malaysia. With an annual mean rainfall of 2540mm there are lots of options and all styles of rivers. The group paddled some great sections with the gem of the trip being the first descent of the south fork of the Signor Mangaa in Perak Province. The river runs through the celebrated Belum rainforest which is said to be older than both the Congo and the Amazon and which boasts over 800 species of snakes, along with bears, elephants and tigers. The only way to the put-in was through a maze of muddy logging roads that run around the mountains high above the river. After a long day of scary driving the ‘road' was blocked by a massive landslide and the team had no choice but to set up camp for the night. In the morning they started a difficult hike down the landslide and through the thick jungle to reach to the river below. Eventually they made it to the river and were rewarded for their efforts with a classic two-day section down to the confluence with the north fork and down the main Signor Mangaa to the lake.

400km Self Support on the Pekans/Moisie

10/10/2008 - On September 22^nd Canadian Patrick Camblin and South African brothers Dave and Steve Fisher embarked on a 400km river trip down the Pekans and Moisie Rivers in north eastern Québec. Usually taking 14-21 days, these rivers have long been a favorite route amongst committed wilderness canoeists, canoes able to speed through the flat water but slowed by the many portages. This descent was self supported in whitewater kayaks with the goal of running all of the previously un-run drops. Because of the cold weather and limited carrying capacity of white water kayaks, the team was only be able to bring 9 days worth of rations (1200 calories a day) - they anticipated it would take them 14 days to complete. How did they fare? 11 days later they arrived tired and hungry successfully descending all but 2 drops, catching fish to subsidize their food rations and also hiking up 3 previously un-run tributaries to run more rapids.

NOTE FROM THE BOYS: If anyone knows the older gentleman in the photo below please get in contact with us. His name is Victor and he generously drove us an hour to the put in after a random run in at tim hortons in Labrador city... He gave us a few phone numbers to contact him with but none of them worked... He's from the south shore of Quebec city, any help in tracking him down would be greatly appreciated!

Rupert River

05/07/2008 - One of Canada's largest rivers, the Rupert drains lac Mistassini into James Bay in North West Quebec. The Rupert was used as an important trade route dating back to 1668 and in recent times has been a favourite multi-day wilderness trip among recreational canoeists. On June 1^st Patrick Camblin, Ben Marr, Joel Kowalski and Phil Quinn took the long drive north to Waskaganish hoping to find this classic river in flood. 3 days later the group took off the lower 80km section having found some enormous rapids separated by flatwater sections that would make any canoeist happy. The Rupert is scheduled to be diverted into La Grande hydroelectric complex sometime in the next 12 months, another huge loss for paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Africa Revolutions Tour - Part 4 - Murchinson Section of the White Nile

10/04/2008 - This is the 'real' Africa. The river is banked by untamed wilderness full of dangerous animals, and the rapids are enormous, difficult and risky to scout - this river is not for the faint hearted.

One of the most mentally demanding rivers in the world, the Murchinson section of the White Nile holds class 5+ big water - full of giant crocs and hippos waiting in the flat pools between rapids. Rush Sturges, Lane Jacobs, Anton Immler and Tyler Bradt bucked up and put on this beast of a river and 3 days later safely arrived at the takeout after a couple nights of restless sleep, a few terrifyingly close croc chases, and one swim (something that is pretty incredible to have survived on this river)...

Madagascar - Manakazo First Descent

15/02/2008 - The Manakazo river proved to be the highlight of the trip; 3 days of high quality whitewater including slides, waterfalls and technical rapids. The boys put on this first d with only an old 250,000 to 1 scale map from 1969 (the latest edition available in Mada), with hopes of finding a bridge somewhere downstream and counting on their driver to find the same bridge. They arrived 3 days later successfully descending this classic section and leaving only 3 drops un run. Here are some of the photos from this incredible river.

Marlow Stunt Doubles for 'Into the Wild'

Last august Marlow spent some time on the Grand Canyon with INTO THE WILD star Emile Hirsch (main character Christopher McCandless) and director Sean Penn...

For those of you who haven't seen the film yet, check it out - good flick. Despite Emile's many recent interviews stating he did all his own stunts, Mar was his double for the whitewater scenes. We reached Marlow for comment in northern California at YGP headquarters where the boys are working on the new double disk feature (two new original films) Source/State of the Art. "Having Hollywood down in the canyon was pretty cool... It's all super chill class 3 but they were all a bunch of pussies."

Malaysia 07

Tribe paddler Anthony Yap has just completed yet another exploratory tour through Malaysia. This time he managed to meet up with a few more of the locals, and a jungle tribe that had been relocated due to damming. Further knowledge of the area gained by the locals not only led the expedition to newer rivers but also revealed that last years Malaysian expedition that visited one of the northern rivers is also home to a man-eating fish, The Toman. Last year the boys were seen happily and obliviously swimming around at the mouth of this river to cool down.

Petite Mecatina - 5 day self support - Part 2

Day 3 - We knew this was going to be a brutal day... Our looming deadline dictated that we push through a 40km section of flatwater. As we shoved off our gravel bar campsite a strong wind started up and it was immediately apparent that our long day was also going to be a tough one... There isn't much else to say about this day other than it was long day of character building - strong headwinds impeded the length of our journey and didn't relent until the wee hours of the next morning... We persevered and, with the sun already having set, finally found an outcrop of rock that we tried to make into our home for the night. The winds ripped through the camp all night and even secured items were in jeopardy. Sometime in the night Billy's spraydeck blew away. With a solid day of whitewater still ahead this could have been a major issue.

Day 4 - Having completed the marathon we were right back into quality whitewater.... The first major drop was an off-vert chute that went into a heinous looking hole. After this the river did something pretty incredible, it split at a 180 degree angle, dividing the flow for the final 20miles before both channels dumped into the ocean. After a group meeting we decided to take the left channel towards the ocean. Even though we lost half our water the day's rapids proved to be arguably some of the best of the trip. The river took on a completely different look as it winded its way through a maze of islands with more of a creeky feel compared to the pushy big water we'd been facing the last few days. Our left channel started with a mini gorge and a couple awesome rapids. After the gorge Billy (and the grouop) lucked out with the gradient being lost in pool drop nature meaning Billy could run down and get a skirt from someone then run back up and charge the rapid. The final rapid of the day saw the flow splitting again before dropping into the ocean... The right channel lost its entire gradient in one shot, with a ~30 footer that landed in walled-out section with an intimidating boil popping up 30 feet downstream... Most of the crew ended their day of whitewater with this beauty. The left side was a leveled slide into a mean looking hole. Willie fired this one up first and got briefly stopped by the hole but came through unscathed... Billy, having already run the right channel, decided he still wanted more, and got it - taking a long powerful beating in this deep hole - eventually swimming and getting body recirced for good measured before flushing deep. To quote Willie, with this final drop ending in the ocean, this hole was "backed up by England", ha! With the sun setting we set up our final camp beside the slide. Stoked.

Day 5 - 5am wake up to make sure we met our ride, we put on for our paddle out and with the sun rising Boomer hiked up and ran another line down the left slide - nice way to start the day. We paddled out with the same sense of purpose the whole trip had held, still needing to beat the tide - which would prevent our ride from reaching us... We were met by the mayor of Huntington Harbour, Paul, who brought us by fishing boat to his small island town where we would eventually get on the ferry that would bring us back to our cars. The ferry stayed docked, delayed 12 hours due to rough seas. The 14 year old girls of the town were pretty happy that this delay coincided with their friday night and spent about an hour giggling in close proximity before finally getting up the courage to go profess their love for Boomer... Classic. When we finally left there was still a 6metre swell and the 220foot ship surged and listed heavily for the duration of the trip... The pukefest that ensued was funny for the first minute but then it was just sad, and it continued for the whole 12+ hour trip. Our group had solid stomachs for the most part, but we had taken over the room that had the toilets at the back, and so were witness to the many casualties of the crossing.

We finally made it back to our cars, stoked on such a successful and thoroughly enjoyable epic. This might seem it was where the journey ended. In reality it took the team another 3 (some 4) full days of traveling before actually getting home. It was a mission for sure, but an epic journey all of us would gladly do again.

This river is one of the many of the area in cue to be damned by Hydro Québec... It was pretty sad coming through such a spectacular section (the gorge) knowing the only other people that had been able to experience this place were dam surveyors. Quebec has the goods, get out there and experience them before they are gone forever.

Petite Mecatina - 5 day self support - Part 1

The mission was simple, get to the bottom of the river in time to catch our ferry and avoid being stranded for an extra 7 days... The rest were just details and thoughts of the unrun gorge and the need to stay at river level if we were to make our ride were attempted to be pushed to the background..... The all-star team consisted of Tommy Hilleke, Erik Boomer, Willie Kern, John Grace, Fred Corriell, Joe Barkley, Billy Murphy, and Tribe pro team members Anthony Yap and Pat Camblin. The trip started in different far reaches of North America with the team rallying from all over to make it up to the end of highway 138 at the far end of north eastern Quebec. 20 hours east of Montreal lays the small maritime town of Nathasquan where we left the cars and flew by floatplane across the vast northern watersheds to our put-in for the Petite Mecatina. Grace and all those southern boys estimated the flow at around 5000cfs... I'd put it more in the 350cms range (~12500) but it was tricky in most parts to judge depth so who knows...

Day one started out with heavily loaded boats and some great big water rapids, lots of moves to be made and some great big water read and run. As the day wore on we approached the imposing domes we had flown over earlier - the unrun gorge and the crux of our trip. We scouted for a long time trying to get a look at what was downstream. The line on the lengthy entrance rapid was a stout right to left ferry to avoid what appeared to be a heinous hole that stretched across most of the river... Tommy and Willie went over to river left and climbed high to get a better view of what we were in for downstream. John and Patrick managed to get high enough up on the river right side to see that the big hole had a soft spot in the middle that was pulsating sufficiently to make an acceptable Plan B. Below appeared to be a portage that ended up being immediately followed by a death rapid. The call was made, this rapid had to be run to avoid portaging around the whole gorge and missing the ferry at the end.

Boomer, Patrick and Anthony were the first down. The line started far right, running down through a chute with a couple tricky little holes and then busting up and onto the back of a big hole in the middle and using the backwash from the hole to get far left. The problem was that the backwash of the hole had a big boil which was the wild card as to how people would fare. Boomer made it up and over and trucked across the river, just behind him Pat got caught on the backside of the boil and battled to get across before turning and squaring up to charge the Plan B center line. A seam opened up and took his bow as he hit a diagonal feeding off a large boulder on the right. He rolled up just in time to be dropping into the wrong side of the heinous hole, backwards, and with no speed. Anthony had been caught on the backside of the boil as well but hit the center of the hole and came through unscathed. Pat got a violent trashing ragdolling left and right and hanging on for his life. With what was known to be downstream this was a really bad spot and swimming would have been curtains. He held on and after a very scary 25-30 seconds he flushed deep and without much energy left made it to the side above the portage. Close call for sure. The rest of the crew busted down with varying degrees of success on the ferry. It was pretty much luck of the draw as to how the boil was acting but everyone made it down in one piece. The rest of the gorge was successfully navigated with a tough river right portage or an easier left portage that required those willing to cross right above the rapid of death. Day one ended late with the sun already having set and everyone happy to get a fire going and get some food down.

Day two brought some amazing rapids and the team made good time navigating this beautiful stretch of wilderness whitewater. There were some more big beatdowns with everyone hanging tough and staying in their boats... Of note were Boomer and Joe who both took solid hole rides in a long rapid with another big right to left ferry. The day ended on a nice gravel bar with bear, moose, and wolf prints everywhere... Kept the fire going that night for sure.

First D - Monkman Creek, Tumbler Ridge – British Columbia

Rush, Patrick, Brooks and Tyler were joined by Nelson BC hucker Mikkel St. Jean. With boats loaded for 3 days away the boys headed deep into Grizzly country in Tumbler Ridge Provincial Park (which had just reopened after having been closed due to 3 Grizzlies that had been “causing a lot of grief”). From the photos and info we had the 20km hike in would lead us to 10 good to go trail-side drops in the 30-80 footer range… Unfortunately most of the drops turned out to be not so trail-side and not so good to go (rocks in landing, bad lips – some would be better with more water) The group still managed to get on a few great drops and some fun rapids on the paddle out.

World Record Descent of Alexandra Falls in Canada's North West Territories

The boys were up on the infamous Slave river filming for the upcoming YGP double disk feature "Source" and "State of the Art" wiith Brooks Baldin and Pat Camblin - Tyler and Rush fired up this monster today on our way south. Tyler won the rosh and went first. He greased the line and stomped the landing. Rush was looking good down the drop holding his form and nailing the entry angle but his skirt blew and he ended up behind the falls for a few scary moments... Slave River

Tribe pro team members Brooks Baldwin, Tyler Bradt, Rush Sturges and Pat Camblin on this northern big water classic. The boys met in Edmonton and made the long drive north to find the Slave running at a solid flow of around 4700cms (170,000cfs). The water was still fairly warm and the colder temps meant the normally heinous mosquito situation wasn’t a problem. The slave boasts some of the best big water boating in the world with a multitude of channels with waves of all sizes to surf and lines as burly as you want to make them.

Rush, Charlie, and Patrick arrived ready to huck. Record snowpack in BC meant rivers were pumping. We got on some goods right off the bat with local Mikkel St. Jean bringing us to the ~60 foot sutherland falls at juicy flow and some other gems between revelstoke and neilson. on our way back to the coast we stopped in kamloops and, unfortunately, had our car broken into and had all the footy/photos stolen along with expensive camera gear, passports and all kinds of other stuff thats a pain to replace. We regrouped at skook with Ian Garcia, Tyler Bradt and the BC kids, and then headed out to find more drops... BC has the goods, enjoy the shots from after the theft.

9 days in june... the crowds left and our girl came back to us... bussy baby... and with warm water... a solid week of heavy rains in the large northern watershed for the ottawa river made the unlikely a reality.... this doesn't happen very often - and somehow there wasn't anyone around... those that were here lucked out and got to surf this beautiful wave at great levels for 9 full days... enjoy the photos featuring tribe team members Anthony Yap and Patrick Camblin, along with Tribe farm team rippers Ben Marr, Dave Nieuwenhuis and Joel Kowalski...

Pat Camblin meets up with the Oil & Water boys Tyler and Seth in South America on the last leg of their epic biofuel adventure. Tyler and Seth travelled from Northern Alaska to the Southern tip of Argentina in a Japanese firetruck they customized to run on vegitable oil - educating kids and governments along the way on the need to find new sustainable energy sources. Some photos from the boys travels through Vietnam filming for the next YGP feature 'Source'... Exploratory trip from the Mekong delta in the south all the way up to the Chinese border covering ~2500kms of 3rd world roads and many miles of new rivers... Vietnam is a country of incredibly friendly people, a rich culture, beautiful landscapes and world class whitewater... Some gems were found that will no doubt be returned to by many in the future.
